Our Time 1998

T he purpose of the Social Science department at IMSA is to give students an understanding of the human i t y 's historical past, ideas, emotions, and time periods, so that the "leaders of t omo r r ow" (namely US!) will not make the same mistakes as their ancestors. Through the teachings of the Social Science depart– ment, students are endowed with the sense of responsibility and feeling that says, "The past is not necessarily doomed to repeat itself." In order to do this, the Social Science department starts out students with the history of a place they know and love — the United States of America. Starting with the colonial colonization in the early 1600's and progressing through the Civil War and the history of Ame r i ca 's modern govern– ment, sophomores gain an understanding of the true nature of the American spirit both on and in the American soil. Says Sopho– more Mike Olson, "I could not be an American if I did not first know what it means to be an American." Junior year, the Social Science depart– ment shows the students, in varying ways, how the entire world has progressed throughout history. Dr. Nokken t ved spends a great deal of time on the historical power of sugar. Mr. Hollister gives his students that historical knowledge they need to offer solutions to real-world problems. Dr. Skinner sets up a Civilization between all of his classes and lets t hem duke it out. Says Junior Gustavo Setrini, " It was loads of fun. Especially when whole countries and empires tumble at the flick of the pope's wrist." Seniors were allowed to supplement their schedules with one or more social science electives. They could choose from a broad range of dynamic courses, including Science, Revolution, Ideology, and the Arts; Macro/Microeconomics; Topics in Psychol– ogy; International Relations; Utopia/Anti- Utopial; and European History. The senior class had a grand time learning about every– thing from stock-market theory to Cold War ideologies and political tactics.
