I n n e r s p a c e This year, IMSA's Physics department received some guests that most high school physics teams can only dream of. They had a wonderful opportunity to spend three weeks this November with Dr. Edward Teller, renowned scientist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics. Dr. Teller began his stay by giving the second annual James R. Thompson Leadership Lecture for the Senior class. Following that, he spent the remainder of his stay at IMSA attending classes such as Topics in Modern Physics and Astrophysics. He also met with a handful of students several times a week for a series of mini-lectures. All of these opportunities were taken advantage of and appreciated by the entire IMSA community. According to Mr. Moyer, who teacher Astrophysics, it was great to have one-on-one interaction with someone "from the front." Several months later, the Physics team received another guest, Dr. Richard L. Garwin, who addressed the senior class for the second annual Richard L. Horowitz lecture series on ethics early in May. Dr. Garwin then spent some time giving lectures on Nuclear Physics to all interested students. In between hosting these honored guests, the Physics team managed to keep up its reputation as "the best department in the school," according to the totally unbiased Mr. Moyer, and rework some of the sophomore physics curriculum. If they didn't get a lot done, well, it was a busy year! We'll forgive them.
