W e i r d S c i e n c e The Chemistry team expanded this year with the addition of two new members, John Eggebrecht and Branson Lawrence. Dr. Cannon left this year, and Mrs. Van Verst filled the gap he left by taking over organic chemistry. Her first project was to teach the class without all the infamous Cannon trademarks. To achieve those legendary interconnections, the Chemistry team branched out to work with other departments this year. Dr. Dods helped teach Science, Society and the Future during the first semester, lending his expertise in the areas of nuclear power and diseases in the water supply, as the class worked toward solving these actual, ill-structured problems. Ever true to IMSA's goals, the chemistry department tried to incorporate more problem-based learning for the sophomores this year. They began the year with the annual pond study, where they took samples of water from the lovely campus pond, a fine example of diseases in the water supply, and were able to make observations on the water. The question they worked from was, "Can we drink the water?", but was rephrased more often than not to, "Would we want to drink the water?" The Chemistry team once again forged interconnections, as they worked with the IRC staff to educate sophomores in research and usage of the IRC. top right: (Kristen Squared) Kristen & Kristen find the purity of their Tylenol sample, right: Mr. Eggerbrecht lectures to his lively Sophomore Chemistry class. above: Dr. Dods demonstrates an experiment as his class sleeps—no, looks on.
